#BeAnAwesome: Medical Officer
What will I do?
Provide optimal medical care and services to the public. I meet people from all walks of life, from as young as new-borns to the old seasoned people on this planet while combating illnesses transmitted by bugs and lifestyle. Apart from that, I also deal with a person's wholistic well-being.
Is it for me?
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Are you passionate about helping the community?
- Are you dedicated enough to sacrifice birthdays, holidays and weekends?
- Doctors experience a paradigm shift in which one also needs to excel non-academically in terms of emotional endurance, determination, dedication and passion. Do you have the mental courage it takes apart from having the right certifications and results?
What is the most enjoyable part of the job?
It is unequivocally rewarding - to be able to carve a smile on patients' worried faces is an exhilarating experience. It is a great feeling knowing you have what it takes to make a difference in someone's life.
Who will employ me?
All fresh graduates are required to go through housemanship training under the Ministry of Health (MOH) for two years, with an additional compulsory service for another two years. After that, you can decide if you want to continue serving the MOH or venture into private practice.
How much will I earn?
For fresh graduates, you will roughly earn around RM1,500 per month. Your salary increases along the years with experience.
Some of the areas of specialisation can include:
- Family practice or primary healthcare
- Internal medicine
There are many more areas of specialisation that you can look into once you have narrowed down your area of interest.
