What is it?

Dentistry is the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the teeth, gums, mouth and jaw, and their impact on the human body. Dentistry is widely considered necessary for complete oral health. 

What will you study?

Dentists are medical doctors, so in your first year as a dental student, you will be learning the same basic medical sciences that medical students begin with, alongside an introduction to dental surgery. You will also study preventative dentistry and communication skills.

Later in your course, you will undergo practical sessions in the practice of extracting teeth, treating diseased gum tissues, cleaning teeth, aligning crooked teeth, and performing surgery on the gum and jaw areas. You will also continue to study the medical aspects of dentistry such as oral disease and anaesthetics.

Core subjects 

Anaesthesia; behavioural science; basic medical sciences; biochemistry; medical microbiology; nutritional science; pathology; pharmacology; principles of first aid and oral surgery.

Typical course duration

It will take at least five years to complete a degree in dental surgery. Degrees in particular specialisations will vary in length.

Prerequisites

Prior studies  in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics is required.

What do graduates do? 

You can work as an dentist, orthodontist, endodontist, paediatric dentist, prosthodontist, salesperson (retail dentistry) or consultant. You can also teach or conduct research in academic institutions.
