Kuala Lumpur, 21st May 2018 – The Asia Student Package Design Competition 2018 themed “Innovation” organised and promoted by the Japan Foundation, ASPaC Association and co-organised by First City UC and the Malaysian Design Council was launched at the Malaysia Design Council, Menara MATRADE. 

The Japan Foundation is an institution which creates global opportunities to foster friendship, trust, and mutual understanding through culture. The package design competition targeted at students living in Asian countries and region stands as a platform to train young talented students, preparing them for a future in innovative careers with the global design industry. 

The ASPaC 2018 event was successfully carried out to enhance the international cultural exchange between Japan and Asian countries involved to create a diverse concept based on their ethnicity with the support of public institutions, design associations, corporate companies, and academic institutions of the participating countries and regions. 

Among the VIPs who were present at the event are, Yang Berhormat Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Hj. Zainuddin, Chairman of Malaysia Design Council, Y Bhg Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Teo Chiang Liang, Director of First City UC, Professor Dr. Mak Chai, Vice-Chancellor, Ms Yeong Yin Cheng, Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Siow Yin Yoong, Dean Faculty of Design and Build Environment, corporate partners, faculty staff members and students. 

The atmosphere of the event was further enhanced by the presence of Mr. Masayuki Kato, General Secretary of ASPaC, Mr. Takaki Mori, Vice President of ASPaC Association, CEO Design Force and Bond Creative, Mr. Motonari Mano, Art Director AT GK Graphics INC., Japan, and Mr. Shawn Ng, Founder & President of BrandCare International. 

In his welcome speech, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Teo explained that the event is a good platform for the students to build their portfolio and will set them on the right path to becoming whom they aspire to be in the future. He also pointed out that the event also nurtures and encourages students in Malaysia to grab the opportunity to display their talent and creativity. 

The highlight of the event was the three (3) presentations. Mr. Masayuki Kato (General Secretary of ASPaC) shared on the theme, innovation and from what ASPaC week is about to more of ASPaC winners’ accomplishments. ASPaC week is more than just about awards; it also includes workshops, discussions, corporate training and exhibitions. 

The Art Director AT GK Graphics INC., Japan, Mr. Motonari Mano enlightened many guests from different design organizations with his talk on package design and branding. 

The final speaker for the event was Mr. Shawn Ng, founder and president of BrandCare International. His speech was delivered with a liberal mind through his sharing on how to improvise and sustain longer engagement with the consumer not just through package design, but by correlating every creation with smart technology. He also revealed about the prominence of augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and society 4.0. It is something that cannot be deteriorated and it will not only change the lifestyles and trends of society but also upgrades in terms of technology, for example, collecting more effective database. 

The ongoing twenty-four days exhibition (21st May - 13th June 2018) at the Menara MATRADE features outstanding creations. The ASPaC 2018 entries for the competition will be judged by ASPaC Chairman, Japan Package Design Association (JPDA) President and renowned designers. The winner will be given a certificate, a medal, prize money, and an invitation to the Awards Ceremony & Reception, Corporation Tour as well as a workshop in Japan.

PETALING JAYA, 5th June 2018 – First City University College‘s annual Innovation Day is back for its seventh time, organised yearly by the Faculty of Engineering and Computing.

This event exhibit the students’ most inventive projects at First City UC, as the university college continues to celebrate the power of innovation in these future engineers, programmers and IT specialists.

This event was graced in the presence of First City UC’s Director, Y Bhg Prof Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mak Chai, Chief Operating Officer, Ms Yeong Yin Cheng, Dean Faculty of Engineering & Computing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christine Lee, faculty staff, potential employers, industry partners, events sponsors, , members of the media and students.

Approximately, fifty projects including the finest projects from students pursuing their final year BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programmes. Selected projects from students who are studying the Diploma in Information Technology programme will also be showcased at the event.

The annual Innovation Day, which has been held since 2012, has traditionally been recognised and anticipated every year; serving as a platform for the students to connect with the industry, as potential employers and partners who have longstanding relationships with the institution are invited to the event. The projects on display during this event often impress the attendees to even extend offers of employment to the students on the spot.

A special guest, Ir. Rocky Wong from the Board of Engineers Malaysia imparted his knowledge and experiences on “Challenges Faced by the Engineering Profession in an Open Market Economy.”

The best projects in the Engineering and Computing categories will be presented with cash awards in a move by the Faculty to boost motivation and provide encouragement to the students to continue producing and creating more innovative projects in the future. The selection of winners will be via professional assessment (70%) and voting (30%).

First City UC constantly works with collaborative partners in relevant digital industries such as IBM Malaysia and Google Malaysia to enhance its students’ learning experience. As the Faculty continues innovating itself to keep up with industry’s demands, there will be more new programmes offered for students who wish to pursue careers in Engineering and Information Technology, particularly in Mechanical, Mobile Computing, Networking and Security.

PETALING JAYA, 6 July 2018 - First City UC hosts its 15th annual graduation showcase of 'SEQUENCE 2018' at Oval Concourse in 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama.

The annual event serves as a platform to expose the future designers to the public and to potential employers from the industry. The objective of this event is to showcase how well prepared our graduates are, how employable they will be.

Tan Sri Dato' Teo Chiang Liang who is the director of First City Corporation Sdn Bhd and the Governor of First City University College, announced that First City UC will launch a new degree programme in September this year, namely BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing, a programme especially suitable for aspiring fashion entrepreneurs.



PETALING JAYA, 15th August 2018 – First City University College hosted the annual Diploma Graduation Showcase 2018 featuring works of art projects by 55 students from its Faculty of Design & Built Environment starting from Wednesday, 15th August until Friday, 17th August, 2018.

The ongoing three-day exhibition will showcase six (6) students’ creative artworks from Diploma in Interactive Design and thirty-nine (39) final year project presentations by students from the Diploma in Interior Design programme. The event was graced by First City UC’s Director, Y Bhg Prof Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mak Chai, Chief Operating Officer, Ms Yeong Yin Cheng, Dean Faculty of Design and Build Environment, Ms. Siow Yin Yoong, potential employers, corporate partners, faculty staff, students and parents.

The word ‘ELYSIAN’, meaning divine inspiration, is the theme for this event. The theme implies the students’ artistic approach to their creativity. The logo formed in the shape of triangles, symbolizes creativity and how the students were inspired during their studies in the field of design. The shapes of wings are related to imagination, thought, freedom and victory. Both these elements symbolize the effort of the students in discovering and manifesting their creative side at First City University and how it contributes towards a professional career.

The forty-five (45) outstanding creations produced by the diploma students, exploring the influence of their experiences and skills developed in First City UC over their final year project. The fourteen (14) weeks ‘LIVE’ projects proposed by a Creative and Communication industry partner were not only accomplished successfully but have also wowed the attended industry partners and other attendees.

With more than two decades of academic excellence, First City UC takes pride in its design events by striving in commitment to meet the demand for creative designers by highlighting top notch graduates who will be assets to the design industry. The design programmes offers holistic design education, supported by highly professional academic staff and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutter and Macintosh laboratories.  

Nyo Jia Lin a student from the Diploma in Interior Design programme, shared that her experience in First City UC has been very rewarding with such platforms offered to exhibit their projects. To further enhance her skills, she looks forward to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior in Architecture Design in First City UC.

In addition to Diploma programmes, the Faculty of Design & Built Environment offers Bachelor’s Degree programmes in Interior Architecture & Design, Graphic Design, and Furniture & Product Design in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. First City UC also offers the first ever Bachelor’s Degree programme in Fashion Marketing in Malaysia, the Foundation in Art & Design programme and Master of Design Management.
