What is it?

A fast-growing discipline, biomedical science is the study of biological science from the perspective of medicine. It is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of medical sciences, which include anatomy and physiology, medical microbiology, medical parasitology, clinical biochemistry, clinical pathology, immunology and serology.

What will you study?

You will learn to test and analyse samples that will provide valuable information for doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. You cannot become a medical doctor through this course, but you will develop scientific knowledge and skills that will allow you to contribute towards the advancement of biological sciences and development in the field of medicine. 

By the time you graduate, you should possess a good understanding of basic sciences and the methodologies of conducting laboratory experiments. These will, in turn, be applied to practical knowledge when conducting research in hospitals, healthcare facilities, laboratories, diagnostic centres and the pharmaceutical industry in general.

Biochemistry; haematology; microbiology; molecular biology and genetic engineering; neurology; pathology; pharmacology; physiology; virology.

Typical course duration

A degree in this subject will take at least three years to complete.
